The mind of the mathematician

چکیده
It goes without saying that mathematicians have minds — my two universityeducated daughters may disagree with that, but of course we know better. So why write a book about the mind of mathematicians? Well the first point to note is that one of the authors, Ioan James, is a mathematician — naturally. He may be known to some as he is the editor of the Topology journal. The second author, Michael Fitzgerald, is a psychiatrist and psychoanalyst and this fact gives away the emphasis of the book. Prior to this book the only comment I had read about a mathematician from a psychoanalytic point of view was from the famous psychoanalyst Eric Idle, who once wrote ‘And Rene Descartes was a drunken fart, I drink therefore I am’. So I was interested to read this book given my singular lack of information about delving into the heart of the mathematician — their mind — and hence their personality.

Bayesian perspective over time
Thomas Bayes, the founder of Bayesian vision, entered the University of Edinburgh in 1719 to study logic and theology. Returning in 1722, he worked with his father in a small church. He also was a mathematician and in 1740 he made a novel discovery which he never published, but his friend Richard Price found it in his notes after his death in 1761, reedited it and published it. But until L...

In his 1905 essay “L’Intuition et la Logique en Mathématiques”, which appears in translation in [P1], pages 210–222, Poincaré looks at mathematical production from a different angle. He pictures two different kinds of mathematician. One kind is devoted to explicit logical precision. Ideas must be broken down into definitions and deductions. Even conceptions that seem clear and obvious must be s...

متن کاملFrom Natural Numbers to Numbers and Curves in Nature – I
According to Kronecker, a famous European mathematician, only natural numbers, i.e., positive integers like 1, 2, 3, ... are given by God or belong to the nature. All other numbers like negative numbers, fractional numbers, irrational numbers, transcendental numbers, complex numbers, etc., are a creation of the human mind. Of course, all these other numbers are created using the natural numbers...
